It's good to have friends in high places
The President has nominated Ms. Meirs as a candidate for the Supreme Court, and already we have the blogs polarized.
Well I have a few concerns with the nominee. The first is she has never been a judge. Now I know that does not exclude her and that there have probably been members of the court that were not judges. My concern is that she has never had to be impartial. She has always been a lawyer, an advocate for a particular viewpoint. She has never had to balance two valid, legal opposing viewpoints to arrive at a conclusion. To a lawyer the outcome is predetermined.
Now if she had been a criminal prosecutor or public defender that, while not being wonderful, would at least mean she has no predetermined loyalties.
She has been with President Bush and his advocate since he was the governor of Texas. She worked on his presidential campaign. It is reasonable to assume that his views are at least akin to hers.
Now, I could be very wrong. She may be a truly unbiased person who can see and hold both views of a problem equally. It is a bit unsettling that a person who has never been on a bench is being elevated to the highest judgeship in the free world.
It will be an interesting process and committee hearings.
