A look back at another event.
On watching Dr. Rice’s testimony and the testimony of others about what was missed, unseen, or misinterpreted, I am reminded of another event in our past:
On January 27, 1967, three astronauts, Lt. Col. Virgil I. Grissom, Lt. Col. Edward H. White and Roger B. Chaffee, entered their Apollo One capsule, which sat on the launch pad for a “plugs-out” test. It is basically a test to see if the capsule could operate on its own. It was a routine test, done several times before. The astronauts would just lie on their backs for an afternoon in their flight suits. Nothing to worry about. The test was done in a pure oxygen environment.
There was an electrical short, and a fire engulfed the capsule. The three men perished quickly.
There was an investigation and testimony before congressional committees. During one of the testimonies one of the astronauts when asked what caused the disaster replied: “A failure of imagination.”
I believe that’s what happened on 9/11. Yes there were the “dots” to connect, and yes no one quite connected them, but I also think that no one really took the idea very seriously. Terrorists would hijack several planes on he same day and within a few hours of each other send them into major landmarks, planes fly every day and have no problems, and besides no one would dare attack us on our own turf.
I believe that those people looking at the information, just could not consider the idea that the event could happen as it did and so that scenario was dismissed or maybe they did consider it, but eventually dismissed it. Maybe it was another country or target, but not here and not New York.
Some things just happen.
